Jaan

A touch of romance
JAAN is a small restaurant that can accommodate only 40 people max. The restaurant’s decoration is minimalist, using the entire-length-of-the-ceiling crystal and silver free-form chandelier as the only highlight. Kong Kee Seafood Restaurant Review

Being a restaurant, Kong Kee does have plenty of dishes listed on its menu. The restaurant specializes in seafood, particularly Giant Grouper, but is more famous for its KL Hokkien Mee. So, Kong Kee is the go-to place of customers who are looking to satiate their cravings for the said noodle dish.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Authentic KL style Hokkien Mee: This dish is not your typical yellow and white noodle but the inspiration is primarily derived from Kuala Lumpur’s cuisine. Thus, the thick noodles are darker in color soaked in dark soy sauce and then topped with chunks of crispy lard. What are more? All the ingredients as well as the chef are imported from KL. So this could be the closest version of KL Hokkien mee that you can find in Singapore.
  • Restaurant setting; laid back ambiance: In a restaurant setting, you can relax and enjoy the foods to your heart’s content. There’s an air conditioned dining space indoors, where small groups of people can enjoy a communal dining experience.

NOTE: A generous amount of crispy pork lard is mixed teasingly in the black noodles, which is great for those who really love lard in their Hokkien Mee.

PRICE: Price starts from S$5 for a plate of Hokkien mee

OPENING HOURS: Daily 11:00 – 01:00

Geylang Lor 29 Fried Hokkien Mee Review

Many locals would drive all the way to East Coast Road to have a plate of the best Hokkien Mee in town. To many foodies and casual eaters, Geylang Lor 29 is a top contender. It’s particularly different as the chef still uses charcoal fire to cook up the noodle dish.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Noticeable wok hei notes: This is like a major throwback to the ’60s when charcoal fire was prominently used by hawker stall persons to cook noodle dishes. Geylang Lor 29 has been serving up this classic hawker food since, and it never fails to deliver. You likely turn up your nose for this dish to savour the smoky fragrance!
  • Generous amount of seafood: Fans of seafood will love Geylang Lor 29’s Hokkien noodles as the fresh prawns and squids given in each plate are more generous than what offered in other places.
  • Offers three different dishes: Aside from the famous fried prawn Hokkien Mee, oyster omelette and carrot cake are also on offer. Both taste good and are a perfect company for the guests while waiting for their Hokkien mee.

NOTES:

  • A regular serving of this stall’s Hokkien noodles can feed up to two persons, while the upsized serving is suitable for 3 to 4 persons.
  • 30-minute waiting time is expected.
  • The original Geylang Lor 29 Swee Guan Hokkien Mee at Sing Lian Eating House in Geylang is run by the brother of Geylang Lor 29 Fried Hokkien Mee at East Coast.

PRICE: S$5 (Regular)

Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles Review

Located at the quaint Chomp Chomp Food Centre, Ah Hock draws the crowd in with its drier than usual and flavourful Hokkien mee. This stall can get busy during peak meal hours, so expect to queue up in a long line and wait 30 to 40 minutes for your food to arrive on your table.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Pieces of prawn and squid hidden at the bottom: This is particularly interesting because this might be the reason for the savoury of the seafood. Prawn and squid are tucked in the bottom, soaking up the gravy and the natural flavours of the other ingredients.
  • Pork stock instead of pork strips, bellies, or lard: This means loyal seafood lovers and those who refrain from pork fat will love Ah Hock’s wholesomeness. The pork stock is actually reduced into a gravy which is then absorbed by the thin bee hoon noodles.

NOTE: Chopped chilli is served instead of sambal.

PRICE: 3-dollar, 4-dollar, and 5-dollar portions are available.

OPENING HOURS:

  • Daily: 17:30 – 00:00
  • Closed on alternate Tuesday

LOCATION: Chomp Chomp Food Centre Stall 27, Serangoon Gardens

Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee Review

Nam Sing’s Hokkien mee is characterised by its dryness and balanced taste of multiple ingredients. Another unique charm of this stall is that fine bee hoon is used instead of thick bee hoon, popular among typical Hokkien mee stalls, and somehow it works! Nam Sing is located at the Old Airport Road Food Centre so travelers and expats interested in this dish should be able to find it easily.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Fine bee hoon over the thick ones: Don’t be too quick to judge, though. The fine bee hoon noodles do a great job in absorbing the gravy base well, so are the juicy flavours of the other ingredients. As a result, you will have a dry to moistened Hokkien mee but packed with seafood, chili, and egg flavours.
  • Chopped red chilies for the extra kick: As though the strong savoury of the noodle itself is not enough, Nam Sing lets you add its freshly chopped chilies into the mix alongside a piece of lemon. It is somewhat a game changer for those who appreciate it more over the traditional sambal chili sauce.

NOTE: Food preparation is approximately 30 minutes so it is best to have something to snack on while waiting. Also, those who try to keep their hands off lard might appreciate Nam Sing’s lard-free noodles.

PRICE: S$5 (Small), S$8 (medium)

OPENING HOURS:

  • Daily: 07:00 till sold out
  • Closed on random days

Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee Review

Always serving up gooey, moist fried Hokkien mee, Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (aka Tian Tian Lai) is a sure-hit to Singaporeans. It is the food stall where you can proudly introduce your foreign friends to this popular local stir-fried noodles dish. The eatery is conveniently located at Toa Payoh, which is known for hosting some of the better hawker centres in the area.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Strong prawn stock flavour: Some Hokkien mee houses use chicken or pork broth so Come Daily’s strong prawn flavour does make a difference. Its wok hei fried noodles infused with rich and sweet prawn stock and served with spicy sambal will let you know you are having the right plate of Hokkien prawn mee.
  • Pork belly strips and pork lard: While most Hokkien mee stalls in Singapore are big on seafood toppings like squid and prawn, Come Daily uses a small amount of seafood but generously mixes pork belly strips and lard crackles into the noodles. The fat is infused perfectly with the stock, and thus adding depth to its tasty flavour.

NOTE: 30-minute waiting time is expected.

PRICE RANGE: The Hokkien Mee is offered in 4-dollar, 5-dollar, and 8-dollar portions.

OPENING HOURS:

  • Tuesday to Sunday: 09:30 – 18:00

Wei Yi Laksa & Prawn Noodle Review

West siders take pride in having the best laksa through Wei Yi. It is one of the few hawker stalls that allow customers to actually choose their favorites from various sets of ingredients. The serving may vary depending on sizes but the meaty toppings always come in generous amounts.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Build your own laksa: Unlike other laksa stalls serving their bowls with fixed sets of ingredients, Wei Yi lets diners build their laksa meals by choosing their favorite stuff. You can mix and match cockles, chicken, prawns, and fried bean curd depending on your mood.
  • Deliciously intense flavour: If you’re used to Katong laksa, then you might probably expect that laksa in the west or in the north is no different – mildly spiced, creamy, and looks like flaming sunset in colour. Wei Yi’s laksa does look darker in curry colour but surprisingly, it is neither overly tangy nor sweetened.
  • Open as early as 05:30 in the morning, so you now know your place for a delicious bowl of laksa when the early bird in you wants this dish for breakfast.

NOTES:

  • Wei Yi also offers very good prawn noodles.
  • 15-to-30-minute waiting time should be expected.

928 Yishun Laksa Review

Known for having the best laksa in the North, 928 Yishun is a must-visit destination for laksa fans being around Yishun area. However, brace yourself for the long queue that can seem endless because this place is just downright popular.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Generous amounts of ingredients: For some, the best laksa should have generous amounts of ingredients, and this laksa doesn’t disappoint with each bowl being loaded with delicious stuff. A small bowl is already filled with fried beancurd, hard-boiled egg, beansprouts, fish cakes, and cockles/crab sticks, so no need to pay more for additional toppings.
  • You can add your own chili paste and laksa leaves: If you prefer your curry to be extra savoury, the homemade sambal chili and laksa leaves are on the tables for you to help yourself.
  • Choose your own type of noodles: Choose among thin bee hoon, thick bee hoon or yellow noodle depending on your own preferences. This is definitely a must-try for food explorers who are keen to find the most suitable laksa for their taste.
  • Homemade chilli sambal: Prepared by the owner, this stall chilli sambal celebrates the sweetness from shallots, the savoriness from dried shrimps and the spiciness from chillies. Let this condiment complement your bowl of laksa.
  • Economical prices at S$2.80 – S$3.30: Always on budget? This laksa shop is perfect with its reasonably priced food items. A small bowl of laksa costs S$2.80 and is available for upgrades, if you have a big appetite. Yishun’s pricing is definitely much cheaper than most laksa shops in Singapore.

NOTES:

  • You may ask the chef to replace your cockles with crabsticks.
  • During the hot summer days, you might want to order your to-go Yishun laksa. The dining space is too small and ventilation is quite poor.

Janggut Laksa Review

From the original makers of Katong Laksa, Janggut is a rebranded food stall whose quality and authenticity of the original noodle dish remains the same. It competes against 328 Katong Laksa for having the original and best laksa ever produced in Singapore. And what makes the rivalry even more interesting is their close proximity to each other at Queensway Shopping Centre.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Mildly spiced soup base but still full of flavours: This means that the curry soup does not leave an overwhelming taste in the mouth, so it is ideal for those who dig saucy food with the right amount of tanginess. Plus, the serving is great for one person so eating this dish down to the last bite does not require hard work.
  • Tasty sambal chili: Because the soup is mildly spiced with chillies, you may opt to add a spoonful of the shop’s tasty sambal chili to add depth to the sweet flavour of the curry.

NOTE: The chicken curry offered at this stall is as equally good as the laksa.

Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa Review

Those who love clay pot dishes might find Depot Road’s spicy noodle soup the best Laksa. If you frequent Alexandra Road and a sudden urge to chomp down a bowl of laksa dawns on you, it’s either you might end up with katong laksa at Queensway Shopping Centre or the clay pot version by Depot Road at Alexandra Village.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Laksa in clay pots: Yes, clay pots retain heat well – perfect for those who always eat with a friend or two. Be sure that your laksa is still hot and flavorful over chatting.
  • The thickest and creamiest version of laksa in town: Cooked in a clay pot, the laksa here tastes thick and rich as it is by appearance. Think carbonara, but only doused in spicy seafood and coconut-based gravy and garnished with coriander. Topped with fish cake, prawns, shredded chicken meat, and cockles, the laksa at this store is something to die for.

NOTE: The store opens as early as 8:30 AM so it makes a great breakfast place for the early birds. If you want to power up your day big time, order a medium or large-sized laksa, but if you’re looking after your diet, a small clay pot will do.

328 Katong Laksa Review

When it comes to finding the best Laksa in Singapore, many locals wouldn’t look beyond East Coast Road. It doesn’t help that beating celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay in a 2013 cooking showdown has made 328 Katong Laksa extra famous. What made it so special to its fans and curious foodies is its extremely delicious and aromatic coconut-based curry soup.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Offers the best Katong-style laksa gravy: This gravy is the epitome of balance in taste and texture coming from all of the ingredients such as coconut milk, chili, dried shrimps, and herbs. It somehow reminds Singaporeans of home and the grandma’s laksa.
  • Delicious otah to whet appetite or to complement the laksa: This grilled-in-banana-leaves spicy fish cake is the perfect appetizer or side dish to go with the creamy laksa. Imagine how aromatic Otah must be, and what a way to whet your appetite for yet another seafood-intensive noodle soup.

NOTES:

  • It also has multiple outlets across the island such as in Queensway, Westgate, and Thomson Road.
  • The menu is small, consisting only laksa, otah, nasi lemak and lime juice.
  • Air-conditioned dining area available

Honeycomb (Closed)

One of the first Korean soft serve brands to arrive in Singapore, Honeycomb has surely gained a lot of loyal fans. Expect long queues in its popular outlet but Apple & Cinnamon, which is the best Korean soft serve it offers, will compensate for your effort. Honeycomb is known for its classic flavours, perfect for first-timers who want to have a safe soft serve experience.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A 2-in-1-dessert destination where you can have both the soft serve and frozen yogurt: If you like your soft serve strong and sweet, Honeycomb won’t disappoint. This brand only uses fresh milk for their soft serve flavours so the distinct milky and creamy taste may linger in the mouth. For those not in the mood for a milky soft serve, then by all means, the yoghurt-based variant may work. Be aware that there might be a noticeable difference between the two especially when mixed up with other ingredients. Some say that the honeycomb flavour does taste better with yoghurt than soft serve.
  • Get your right sweetness level hit with the honey syringe: Albeit gimmicky, it is still something that will catch your attention and make your soft serve more beautiful. It’s probably one factor that made Honeycomb popular among Singaporeans but in fairness to the quality of the honey, it seem to not change a bit despite being inserted into a syringe tube.

Flavours
Honeycomb’s soft serve flavours are limited to 5 – Classic, Chocolate, Caramel, Matcha, Apple & Cinnamon. All of these flavours already come with a chunk of honeycomb and liquid honey.

Recommended Flavours
– Apple and Cinnamon
– Matcha

Price Range: S$6 – S$7

Honey Crème Review

Yet another soft serve brand where long queues all-day are a normal scenario, Honey Crème must be doing something better than the rest of its competitors. It offers a wide variety of flavours, some of which are introduced seasonally, and they come in generous portions for the prices you can afford.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Rich, smooth, and silky soft serve ice cream: At Honey Crème, the soft serve ice cream shows a perfect balance between all flavours and the way they were mixed up altogether (i.e. handmade technique). Hence, the rich and silky smooth consistency.
  • New flavours may be introduced occasionally: This year’s Chinese New Year, Honey Crème had Alishan milk tea and Yuan Yang flavours on its menu. And to celebrate SG50, this ice cream parlour introduces the local favorite flavour Honey Creme Pandan Gula Melaka from 1 Jun 2015 to 30 Sep 2015. So remember to watch out for the new flavour specials during public holidays or important occasions.
