Sin Hoi Sai Eating House at East Coast Road Review

Sin Hoi Sai is the perfect place to watch the Singaporean locals go by. You can eat by the roadside, order as many Zi Char dishes as you want, sit back and swig a bottle of ice-cold Tiger beer, and have a small talk with the aunties/uncles. These scenes could be someone’s description of the best Zi Char restaurant, but as dining experience is as subjective as beauty, each is still his own. Below are some of the highlights that could differentiate Sin Hoi Sai from other Zi Char eateries in Singapore.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Friendly eating house: It is no secret that Zi Char eateries run by aunties and uncles do have a reputation for being a place with no non-sense and straightforward customer service. At Sin Hoi Sai, the friendly atmosphere makes the difference, as the aunties themselves are approachable and cordial. You may even exchange food ideas with them or ask for any food requests.
  • Get your hands dirty with live seafood in tanks: Have a pound of crabs, prawns, squids, or red snappers cook to order. The freshness of the seafood draws the crowd in because you’ll get what you want right here, right now. Try the best-selling chili crab and brace yourself for the explosion of hot and spicy flavor in your mouth, yet the succulent and sweet crab meat balances the tanginess of the chilies.
  • Vegan-friendly starters and mains: Don’t be surprised when you see a couple of Indians coming by this eating house because the menu is vegan-friendly. While the chefs don’t necessarily make Indian dishes, they know how to cater to their vegan patrons. Mock meat dishes are available for your mains and you may specifically tell them to not put ingredients that you don’t want in your food. Some of the must-try vegetarian dishes include dried chili chicken, sambal Kang Kong, sambal chicken fried rice, and curry mutton.
  • Eat by the roadside till the break of dawn: While most eateries do have alfresco dining, Sin Hoi Sai is one of the few that allows its guests to dine at the alleyway till 04:00. It doesn’t help that the location itself is a busy road, along East Coast in Katong, so you get to watch many locals pass by or flock to the restaurant. More importantly, you’ll have the chance to observe the very simple and quaint side of Singapore.

MENU: The menu is expansive with a lot of vegan and non-vegan food selections. Mock meats are available upon request in order to cater to vegans. The regular menu is also customizable according to your specific diet, and the owners are open to feedback and suggestions. In fact, part of Sin Hoi Sai’s tradition is to include dishes popular by demand on their menu.

AMBIANCE: Tucked along the busy East Coast Road, Sin Hoi Sai is a tourist attraction on its own. It is why a boisterous, jam-packed crowd during its peak hours has been a normal scenario in this eating house. However, the spacious area, cool breeze, and friendly staff make up for these oddities. The laid-back ambiance feels like enjoying a hearty meal with your friends and relatives.

RECOMMENDED DISHES:

  • San-lou Horfun
  • Sambal Beef Fried Rice
  • Sambal Kangkong
  • Sweet and Sour Pork
  • Marmite Pork Ribs
  • Indonesian Chicken

NOTE: Reservation is highly recommended.

Por Kee Eating House Review

A traditional Chinese eatery as quaint as Tiong Bahru, Por Kee Eating House is one of the best zi char places on the island. Pork ribs, tofu, steamed fish, hand-made flat noodles, chili crabs, and buttered prawns taste so good that make the eatery an attraction around the area. This old-school Chinese home-style eating place is where you could proudly take your grandparents and relatives for a weekend dinner.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A wide selection of Cantonese dishes: Lotus Root Soup, Cereal Prawns, Fried Beef Hor Fun, and Homemade Beancurd are just some of the delicious offers on its menu. The heavy usage of sauces and oil gives most of the dishes a rich taste.
  • Signature Homemade Beancurd: Por Kee’s signature beancurd is particularly commendable for its balanced taste and texture; crispy on the outside, soft and silky on the inside. Served with mushrooms in a flavourful sauce infused with wok-hei, this beancurd is a dish to die for.
  • Champagne Pork Ribs: This pork rib dish is available in both solo and group portions. Expect to be wowed by the faint Champagne after-taste. The bone-in cuts may sometimes come with fats, but the thick savory sauce could be too tempting for you not to try it anyway. For this reason, it is one of the best-selling signature dishes at Por Kee.
  • There is a dining area with air conditioning: As Zi Char eateries tend to sport a humble and run-down abode, Por Kee’s air-conditioned dining area with around 8 large round tables is truly special. This in-room amenity is perfect for those who would like to find comfort from the hot weather that envelopes the island all year round.

MENU: At Por Kee Eating House, the menu is predominantly Cantonese. There is a wide variety of starters and mains for vegans and non-vegans. A good selection of wines is also available to clean up the savory after-taste.

RECOMMENDED DISHES:

  • Homemade Beancurd
  • Champagne Pork Ribs
  • Singapore Chili Crab
  • Crispy Butter Prawns
  • Deep-fried Salted Chicken
  • Thai Style Live Sea Bass
  • Sweet and Sour Pork
  • Fried Beef Hor Fun

AMBIANCE: Being a Zi Char restaurant, Por Kee tends to have a noisy crowd during lunch and dinner hours. The indoor dining area is very limited, while the tables outdoor could hardly accommodate a large group of diners. Walk-in guests should expect to wait for at least 10 minutes to get a table but the delectable food will totally make up for it.

NOTE: Reservation is highly recommended.

This coffee shop offers the most satisfying, Cantonese-style zi-char experience with back alley dining in a low-key ambience. And looks can be deceptive! It is pretty evident from the loyal following waiting to indulge in a splendid Chinese fare time after time.

Stew Kuche

Stew Kuche (koo-shay), the German word for kitchen, is like no other in Singapore. It dares to be different by settling down in a Kopitiam at Bukit Merah which is just a short stroll to Ikea and Queensway Shopping Centre. But behind the simplicity of this food stall are some of the best German food varieties such as Pork Knuckle, Paprika Beef Goulash, and sausages.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Pork knuckles at reasonable prices: Available in either full (S$25) or half portion (S$15), the pork is marinated and deep-fried perfectly. This lets the crispy skin produce a great crackling sound upon every bite while the meat still tastes juicy and is succulent.
  • Achar sides to complement the local palate: The traditional sauerkraut dish is replaced with spicy pickled vegetables. Compared to sauerkraut (sour cabbage) though, Achar is more perfect for the tropical weather that Singapore has, as the local pickled vegetables is made up of cucumber and pineapple. And you will notice the difference when you dine alfresco on a hot summer day.
  • Great mix of Western fare: Stew Kuche’s wide variety of dishes could take you to Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy. This food stall has mixed grills, 8 types of sausages, pastas, stew dishes, Swiss rosti, salads, and traditional German sides.
  • Interesting selection of stew dishes: As the shop’s name implies, stew must be a highlight. There’s Ossobucco for veal meat lovers, oxtail stew for the adventurous, lamb shank for Mediterranean dieters, beef goulash for the avid German foodies, and seafood stew for those who simply love it.
  • A dedicated counter for craft and draft beers: Fresh off the tap, you can order pints of Schneider Weisse or Archipelago draft beers by the counter. More importantly, beers at Stew Kuche come with an affordable price tag, which starts at S$8 for the German, English and Belgian brands.
  • Far from your fancy restaurant: Definitely not for the posh guests, but could be the right place for those who want to dine in a very public setting with a cool and hippy atmosphere. It’s a kopitiam so expect to see lots of people dining alfresco and everything is done self-service. It is also worth mentioning that Stew Kuche is open for reservation.

MENU: Stew Kuche offers a small size menu but there is a good mix of predominantly Western fare. The pork knuckles, sausages, and stews are ideal for sharing by two persons as the serving size is of German standard, while the selection of beers can keep the boys coming back for more.

AMBIANCE: The kopitiam that houses Stew Kuche is located in the maze of motorcycle and automobile repair shops; so, the industrial element in the surrounding could be an interesting scene to any observant guest. The kopitiam itself looks simple yet modern enough to attract casual customers. This place tends to get buzzy during its dinner hours. However, if you’re used to eating in hawker centres, you probably wouldn’t mind a bit of noise distraction at all.

AVERAGE PRICE/PAX: S$15

NOTE: Cash only

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Café

As the name implies, Blackforest cake is the major crowd puller of this good German restaurant and café. Germans do love their cakes as much as the French love their breads and sweets. Thus, it isn’t surprising to have a whole café named after Black Forest, a mountain range in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany which also happens to be popular for its gourmet cuisine. But what else should you expect from Stuttgart?

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Authentic Blackforest cake (S$12/slice): Taste-wise, it is something you’d write home about. The cake is moist, light, layered with cream and then covered with chocolate shavings. But what truly gives this dessert the punchy flavour is its alcoholic content derived from the double-distilled cherry brandy. Definitely a quick fix for your liqueur-based dessert!
  • Plenty of beers and liqueurs: The beers are generally sourced from Black Forest and Stuttgart, not necessarily in Bavaria, so there’s a good break for you to catch up on other German beer brands, especially when it’s that time of the year again for Oktoberfest (Hello, free-flow of beers!). Although the prices don’t come cheap at S$10++/0.5L, the chance to drink up these imported goods first-hand is going to be worth it.
  • Unusual wine list: If you’re an adventurous wine-taster, rose and ice wines from Baden-Wurttemberg might struck a melody to your ears! But if you’re not there for the wine alone make sure to ask for the waiter’s recommendation if such a wine is indeed a good pair to certain dishes, as they might not complement each other.

MENU: Stuttgart Blackforest Café’s menu is small but enough to satiate your cravings for typical southern food. Pork knuckle is available in two sizes; single or full servings (good for 4 persons). There’s hotdog, pasta, and apple pie for kids while adults can engage in a four-course meal. The main menu isn’t exactly vegan-friendly but there’s vegetarian pizza and a variety of salads to choose from.

RECOMMENDED DISHES

  • Pork Knuckle
  • Specialty Sausages
  • Pork Schnitzel
  • Baked Salmon
  • Mixed Salad
  • Maultaschen
  • Blackforest Cake
  • Chocolate Lava Cake

AVERAGE PRICE/PAX: S$40

This restaurant also prides on having a wide array of tapas that could transport you to Barcelona, Greece, Andalusia, Vasque, and Catalan.

Esquina

If you judge a Spanish restaurant by your tapas dining experience, then Esquina could be considered one of the best Spanish restaurants in Singapore.

Founded by Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton, Esquina is known for its upmarket version of a tapas bar, which combines modern Iberian-inspired dishes with Asian spices, accompanied by a good selection of wines.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Haute-cuisine tapas: At Esquina, the tapas look exceptionally creative with the way the chefs have prepared them. You can clearly see the high level of cooking done to those bite-size tapas dishes, and this alone is the remarkable highlight that sets Esquina apart from other tapas bars in the country.
  • Bespoke set lunch and dinner menus: As Esquina does have a variety of dinner and lunch set menus, you will have lots of options to explore. In fact, you could have a taste of certain dishes that are not available on a la carte or other pre-fixed menus. For example, a bunch of canapes is only made ready upon the arrival of supperclub diners. With this, you could say that each menu at Esquina is custom-made in accordance with the appetite of its customers.
  • Watch the chefs in action: Marvel at the chefs and cooks from the open-kitchen bar as they work wonders on your food. At the bar, there is enough space between the chefs and the diners to encourage interaction and camaraderie, especially if ever you are curious to know their secrets to make exceptional tapas dishes. The chefs would also cater to special requests like creating a vegetarian version of the Spanish breakfast.
  • Private, quiet, and elegant dining room upstairs: Esquina 2.0, that is. Located upstairs of the restaurant, you can get a hold of this lovely place and try its bespoke tasting menus by reserving a private dinner. It is capable of seating 25 persons and is arranged with a long dining table, which definitely calls for a cozy feast.

  • Ox Cheek and Tongue
  • Confit Squid and Chorizo Paella
  • Roasted Landes Duck Breast

AMBIANCE: Nestled at the corner of a quaint neighborhood in Chinatown, Esquina has a historic vibe to it. Inside is a narrow array of bar tools right in front of an open kitchen where guests can have traditional tapas style of eating. Two main chefs are spearheading the front whom you could have a meaningful discussion about food with. As Esquina is a small tapas bar, fast-paced moments tend to get very rowdy but perhaps dining upstairs might provide a more private space.

Don Quijote

Inspired by the gritty character of Don Quijote de la Mancha, Don Quijote is on a quest for introducing the best Spanish food to locals and expats in Singapore. This tapas bar and restaurant is located at the famous Dempsey Road and offers an extensive array of authentic Spanish dishes that could take you back to the country-side of Spain. At the price of S$58++, your meal will be complemented by free-flow supply of beers, wines, and sangria.
  • Cook-to-order live seafood: A Spanish restaurant wouldn’t be complete without its seafood fare but what sets Don Quijote apart from its competitors is its cook-to-order fresh from the market style. Pick amongst baked live whole snapper, baked Boston Lobster, Clams in white wine jus, and Gambas al Ajillo. The seafood market menu is only available on weekends.
  • Tomahawk steak for sharing: Recommended to meat lovers, the steak meat is of 400-day grain-fed Australian Wagyu variety and does come in premium cuts (bone-in rib steak). However, it must be pre-ordered one day in advance as Don Quijote lives up to its promise of serving you with fresh food only.
  • Spain-only wines and other wine selections: Over 100 Spanish wine labels to choose from, which is a nice touch for Spanish expats who do miss having their regular glass of local wines back home. Punjab Grill

Punjab Grill is taking the Marina Bay Sands by storm for its Tandoori chicken, spiced curry dishes, and street food with a modern twist. This upmarket Indian restaurant is owned by the Czar of Indian Cuisine, Jiggs Karla, who is known for using old-wisdom cooking methods in making North Indian gourmet dishes. Through Punjab Grill, expect to be taken to an epicurean journey through Punjab-Lahore-Rawalpindi’s rich food culture and heritage.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • From street food to fine dining: Jiggs Karla and his corporate chef, Ahamad, must be doing magical things in the kitchen as they re-invent Punjabi street food to befit haute cuisine. They use high quality ingredients and impeccable presentation combined with the chefs’ mastery of North Indian culinary. If you miss your street-food trips back in India, Golgappa platter (S$15) or the cheesy Palak Paneer (S$32) might make up for the time lost.
  • Set lunch menus for both vegetarians and carnivores: In any day of the week, you can have a complete Indian lunch meal at Punjab Grill. Weekday set lunch is supposed to power you to make it through the day and the weekend menu (i.e. kebab and biryani) feels like slowing down with your mates on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Inviting a business exec to lunch? Get the chef’s specials from soup, main course to sorbets through the Executive set lunch.
  • Best fine dining Indian restaurant for vegetarians: Singaporeans love their vegetable curries as well as the Indians. It isn’t surprising to find Sarson Ka Saag (signature spiced vegetable curry) here at Punjab Grill even. But what makes Punjab Grill stand out is its special kebab, biryani and lunch menu for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
  • Indian food for all types of customers: The recipes are thoughtfully created for the Indian customers, but the dishes are mildly spiced for the Singaporeans; hitting two birds with one stone. This is why native Indians might find the food a bit bland as compared to the tasty and flavourful comments of the island’s locals.
  • Papadum is served before meal: As soon as you find comfort at your seat, a basket of rolled Papadum with three dips (i.e. mint, mango chutney, and yogurt) will be served to your table. It is a nice gesture that many customers highly appreciate since not all Indian restaurants in Singapore do this.

MENU
Punjab Grill’s menu is as diverse as North Indian cuisine, from lunch and dinner set meals, a la carte, and 10-course chef tasting menu up to its catering menus for special occasions. Vegetarians will love the vegan-friendly menu as you are provided with flexible options. Meat-based mains like kebab and butter chicken won’t also disappoint as they are cooked until soft and aromatic in the tandoor.

AMBIANCE
Being a fine dining restaurant, Punjab Grill utterly looks splendid with its grand chandelier, glass and metal accents, and upholstered panels. These features alone could be a key attraction of any restaurant, but to experience the regal Maharajas-inspired setting and hospitality is another story. And though going to Punjab Grill requires long walk, its odd location at the extreme corner of the MBS Shopping area can provide solace and quiet to diners on a food trip getaway.

  • Authentic Mexican hot sauce: If you’re a big fan of Mexican hot sauces like Sriracha and Tapatio, you can have it here at Muchachos. Viva Mexico

We all know how hard it is to find a good Mexican restaurant in Singapore. Thanks to Viva Mexico that search could now be over. Therefore, for locals and expats who want to sample “westernized” Mexican cuisine in Singapore, Viva Mexico should be right up your alley.

  • Mexican restaurant for vegans: Vegans won’t sell themselves short with the restaurant’s extensive veggie options from salads, entrees to mains. There’s eggplant with spinach and cheese for the main course, but you can also go a bit adventurous with Mexican Hotpot, a home-style vegetable dish doused in spicy tomato sauce and is served with rice.

MENU: Viva Mexico prides on having an extensive menu for their entrees and mains, in order to accommodate both vegans and non-vegans. The restaurant even offers a lunch set menu for S$18 which comes with soup, main dish, and a dessert. But if you prefer a la carte, Sopa de Mexico and nachos are just light enough to keep you interested in the upcoming dishes. For mains, either you go dishes with rice or stuffed tortillas with a twist. Ladies may also love the free-flow margaritas every Thursdays!

Levant (Closed)

A relatively new addition to the pile of restaurants along Greenwood Avenue, Levant is known for its good Middle Eastern menu with an emphasis on Lebanese fare. Set lunch and dinner menus are available for heavy eaters while a la carte is highly recommended to diners who want flexibility in their food selections. This elegant restaurant deserves to be one of your culinary destinations as the consistently delicious foods are always accompanied by great services in a relaxing environment.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Best lamb shank Biryani in Singapore: Meat is tender, falls off the bone and melts in the mouth. The whole lamb shank was indeed “stewed to perfection” complemented with the best biryani rice ever cooked on the island. It tastes perfect and unique in its own way. A connoisseur might even notice that the distinct sweet taste and aroma of the spices could be a mix of other Middle Eastern cuisines instead of being exclusively Lebanese.
  • Notable appetiser platter: As with any Middle Eastern fare, a platter of mixed appetisers is ever-present. You can’t possibly skip this because most of the top foods are on the platter such as the hummus, moutabal, and tabboula. Either of the two, you can then pair it with Ghormeh Sabzi stew and enjoy that warm, fuzzy feeling in your stomach.

MENU: Levant’s menu is quite decent varying from set lunch/dinner, a la carte to kid’s menu. However, the menu isn’t designed for vegetarians as most of the signature dishes are heavy with red meat. But Levant is hoping to make up for this by catering to special requests as they come.
