Retrospective is a regular series showcasing bodies of work from an extended period of activity by filmmakers of different eras. Devoted to the region’s film history, contributions and movements within the industries in Asia, the platform focuses on particular profiles, themes and aesthetics to allow audiences to experience past and ongoing cinematic transformations.

About the programme

Hailed as the Eastern equivalent of Laurel and Hardy, the Singaporean comedians Wang Sha (1925 – 1998) and Ye Feng (1932 – 1995) graced the stages of amusement parks and beamed from the television screens between the 1960s to the early 1990s. Adored and celebrated by audiences across Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan, this dynamic duo enjoyed a versatile and illustrious career, leaving an indelible mark in music, theatre, and over 40 feature films.

The Asian Film Archive proudly presents for the first time in Singapore, a retrospective featuring these two legends. The 26 featured films showcase their memorable roles and enduring charisma that continue to resonate with today’s audiences. Accompanying this film retrospective is the exhibition Comic Relief, showcasing artefacts like posters, original film memorabilia, and props documenting the duo’s film careers. The film retrospective and exhibition will run from 12 January to 7 April 2024 at Oldham Theatre.*

*Film screenings are ticketed. Entry to the exhibition is free.
