Showko – Japanese Therapy
During lockdown everybody went within and their lives changed. Showko takes you on a hilarious ride from everyday life into her surreal world through Rakugo (Japanese sit-down comedy) and ventriloquism with her quirky handmade puppets. Expect to roll on the floor like sushi and laugh! Hugely entertaining and wonderfully offbeat.
*a bit more…
Showko is arguably the world’s quirkiest and most original ventriloquist and Rakugo performer. Her real name is Ayako Ono but she was awarded the stage name Showko Showfukutei after completing a 3 year Rakugo apprenticeship. Rakugo is a 400 year old traditional form of Japanese comedy storytelling and – like martial arts – requires the apprentice to train under a master. The difference being that in martial arts you learn how to kick arse; in Rakugo you learn how to make someone laugh their arse off.Armed with a sharp wit, a keen sense of kookiness and an adorable collection of hand-made puppets it’s no wonder Showko was a finalist on Australia’s Got Talent and has her own special on Amazon Prime Video (US & UK).

Wet Plate Portraits with Robert Burke Raby
As part of our exhibition Vintage Pop: Part 1, we are organizing Wet Plate Portrait sessions with Robert Burke Raby on two Fridays in the month of April!
Wet plate collodion (or sometimes known as tintype when poured onto a sheet of black anodized aluminium) is an early photographic process that was invented in 1851. Unlike the instant gratification you get from its digital counterpart today, analogue photography like wet plate collodion takes approximately 15 minutes from start to finish as longer exposure times and complex developing methods are required before results could be seen.
Each monochromatic image that is rendered is unique and one-of-a-kind. Using mainly silver, collodion, light and an extra serving of alchemy, your image will be immortalized onto a 4 x 5-inch (10.16 x 12.7 cm) metal plate which will last around 100-200 years.
This is not merely a photoshoot as you will be invited to join in this interactive process to watch your image reveal itself in the fixing bath and our photographer will also take you through a short history on early photography as well.
See you all for the shoot:)

Saturday Night’s At Zoom’s Hottest Online Club – Mildly Wet
If you weren’t at Mildly Wet’s Saturday night Zoom party, you missed everything from Tiger King virtual backgrounds, memes, dance offs from our queer community to people holding sombreros while lip syncing, fisting the air while wearing face-masks and riding bicycles while dancing (we love a man who multitasks).
Someone asks “where’s the after-party” while another clubber messages “I hope this never ends”. What draws the crowd in? The absolute humour of seeing people holding up bottles of vodka, guitars, or [insert strange prop] while dancing and singing in their bedrooms. The club runs every Saturday night for free and is attended by people of numerous ages streaming in pairs or by themselves in apartments around the world – from Sydney to Bangkok.
Mildly Wet’s club runs every Saturday night 9pm AEDT until further notice, with more dates and events to be added due to the popularity. You can sign up on Eventbrite and follow them on Instagram.

ABOUT HAW PAR VILLA:
Haw Par Villa – formerly known as the Tiger Balm Garden – is an 8.5-hectare Asian cultural park, the last of its kind in the world. Built in 1937, Singapore’s largest outdoor art gallery is the brainchild of Aw Boon Haw, the millionaire philanthropist and marketing extraordinaire who gifted the world Tiger Balm. The eclectic park is a treasure trove of Asian culture, history, philosophy and religion – quirky yet enlightening, at the same time.
Ascend, dear wanderers, on the signature red brick road, through the majestic entrance archway. Look out for Chinese classics such Journey to the West and the Eight Immortals. Tigers, leopards and dragons lurk in corners. Rolling hills and caves evoke contemplation and reflection. Elsewhere in the park, animals of all shapes and sizes beckon: goats, pandas, rabbits, gorillas, giant lobsters, even a crab-lady, the list goes on.
