7 Learning Approaches Your Child Will Encounter in an American International School

American international schools cater to families who want to provide their children with American education despite living outside the US. To meet the needs of the members of their multicultural academic community, many of these schools have been quite welcoming of innovative learning approaches. As a parent seeking the best education for your children, it’s essential to understand some of the most common learning approaches employed by international schools. Doing so will help you determine how the schools that offer American curriculum in Singapore will be able to prepare your child for success in a globalized world. Here are a few of the learning approaches with which you should be acquainted.

1. Inquiry-Based Learning

Inquiry-based learning empowers students to become active learners through exploration, investigation, and discovery. Teachers facilitate this learning approach in the classroom by posing thought-provoking questions and providing opportunities for hands-on experimentation. They also encourage students to delve deep into their topics of interest. Engaging in inquiry-based learning experiences gives students the chance to develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and information literacy.

This approach to learning lies at the heart of the educational philosophy in American international schools. It also aligns seamlessly with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes’s practice of encouraging students to inquire into real-world issues and develop a deeper understanding of global challenges. By fostering curiosity, creativity, and independent thinking, inquiry-based learning prepares students to thrive in an ever-changing world where adaptability and lifelong learning are key.

2. Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning offers students the opportunity to tackle real-world problems and engage in meaningful, hands-on projects that promote a deeper engagement with the lesson and application of concepts. This learning approach is a cornerstone of the curriculum used in many American international schools. Through interdisciplinary projects, international school students can explore complex issues, conduct research, and develop solutions that address authentic challenges. Working collaboratively and applying their knowledge in context enables students to further develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in the IB program and beyond.

3. Experiential Learning

Emphasizing hands-on, immersive experiences, experiential learning enables students to learn by doing. Experiential learning takes many forms in American international schools. These include field trips, service-learning programs, social programs, outdoor education, and practical activities. Such experiences provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts. This, in turn, fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of concepts and their application in real life.

By engaging in experiential learning and navigating authentic challenges that reflect their experiences, students can develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Moreover, experiential learning aligns with international schools’ commitment to holistic education and the development of the whole child. This is because learning through experience helps prepare students to become active, engaged learners who are ready to make a positive impact in the world.

4. Collaborative Learning

Collaborative learning fosters a supportive and inclusive learning environment by promoting active engagement, communication, and teamwork among students. In American international schools, collaborative learning is integrated into the curriculum through group projects and peer-to-peer interactions. By working together to solve problems and share ideas, students develop essential social and emotional skills such as empathy, communication, and conflict resolution.

It also promotes intercultural understanding by empowering students to collaborate with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Such interactions can help them learn to respect and appreciate different perspectives and give them the means to thrive in multicultural environments and contribute positively to a global society.

5. Differentiated Instruction

Differentiated instruction recognizes that students have diverse learning needs and abilities, and it seeks to accommodate these differences through flexible teaching and learning strategies. In American international schools, differentiated instruction is tailored to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring that all learners have access to meaningful and challenging learning experiences. Teachers use a variety of instructional methods, materials, and assessments to support diverse learners, such as by providing scaffolding, extensions, and alternative assignments as needed.

American international schools are also likely to offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which are rigorous high school courses first offered by the College Board in the United States. Covering a wide range of subjects, including mathematics, sciences, humanities, languages, and the arts, AP courses are designed to provide students with college-level academic content and skills, culminating in standardized exams.

6. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Recognizing the importance of developing social and emotional skills, social-emotional learning approaches are used to support the student’s academic and personal growth. In American international schools, SEL is integrated into the curriculum through explicit instruction, classroom activities, and supportive school environments.

Through SEL, students learn to recognize and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. By fostering social and emotional competencies, SEL promotes a positive school climate where students feel safe, supported, and connected to their peers and teachers. SEL also aligns with the IB Programme’s commitment to holistic education and the development of internationally-minded individuals. By nurturing students’ well-being and interpersonal skills, SEL prepares them to thrive academically, personally, and socially in a diverse and interconnected world.

7. Global Citizenship Education

Global citizenship education empowers students to understand, respect, and actively contribute to the world around them. This fosters a sense of belonging to a global community. In American international schools, global citizenship education is woven into the curriculum through inquiry-based learning, service projects, and cross-cultural experiences. Students in these academic institutions have plenty of opportunities to explore global issues, develop intercultural competence, and take action to address local and global challenges. Engaging with diverse perspectives and cultures allows students to develop empathy, respect, and a sense of responsibility towards others.

By embracing these diverse learning approaches, American international schools and IB schools create dynamic and enriching educational environments where students are empowered to thrive. These schools provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world while growing as responsible, compassionate, and globally-minded individuals.

3 Best Licensed Money Lenders in Singapore 2024: Reliable & Flexible

Perhaps you’re pressed for cash due to an untimely car repair expense, or you need money to fix things around your home. If you’re in a tough financial position, a loan may just be the answer. We’ve researched and found the 3 best licensed money lenders in Singapore [2024 review].

These lenders offer various loans to suit different financial needs, such as payday loans, business loans, and medical loans. They offer favourable conditions, such as low-interest rates and flexible terms. Loans are also available for foreign nationals with permanent residency in Singapore.

All the moneylenders on our list are licensed and listed in the money lender registry by the Ministry of Law in Singapore. Choosing a licensed money lender is crucial as it ensures that the lender will comply with the rules and regulations of lending money and that your interests will be protected.

In contrast, working with an unlicensed lender can result in fraud and data theft.

Applying for a loan is easy as you can complete the application online. Once approved, you can visit the moneylender and finalise the loan agreement.

Ensure that you read the agreement and understand your obligations before signing it. Defaulting your loan repayment can have legal consequences and damage your credit score.

7 Types of Smart Road Solutions That Help Improve Traffic Efficiency and Safety

On top of revolutionising how people interact with the environment, smart technologies can also be used to make communities safer and healthier. Traffic safety and management, in particular, is a key area where the use of data, sensors, and automation can make a significant difference. Using smart solutions to enhance transportation systems can pave the way for more efficient and safer road networks that benefit both motorists and pedestrians alike. Here’s a list of some of the different types of smart road solutions that are currently making a positive impact in communities around the world.

Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS)

Intelligent traffic management systems (ITMS), sometimes called intelligent traffic systems or intelligent transport systems, utilise advanced sensors, cameras, and data analytics to monitor traffic flow in real-time. These solutions gather and analyse information, which is then used to smartly adjust traffic signals, manage lane assignments, and provide current traffic information. This optimises traffic flow and reduces congestion.

London’s Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOT), which was initially developed in 1979, is a pioneering example of this system. Where its sensors are installed, SCOOT is able to reduce delays by 15%. More than 350 towns and cities around the world currently use this system. This proactive approach to traffic management not only enhances efficiency but also improves road safety by reducing the risk of accidents caused by traffic bottlenecks, especially in busy urban spaces.

Dynamic Lane Management

Although necessary for road construction, repair projects, and emergency situations, road closures often lead to traffic congestion. Dynamic lane management systems can help calm traffic and prevent collisions while reducing traffic buildup by up to 80%. The solution accomplishes all these by leveraging sensors and automated controls to adjust lane configurations based on real-time traffic conditions.

By dynamically allocating lanes, such as reversible lanes or variable speed limits, dynamic lane management systems can optimize traffic flow and enhance safety on the road, especially along work zones. The Zipper Merge system, implemented in Minnesota, USA, is a demonstration of how such a system works. In this particular example, a technique called “late merge” is used to encourage drivers to merge at the last possible moment before lane closures.

Connected Vehicle Technology

Connected vehicle technology, an example of which is Audi’s Traffic Light Information (TLI) system, enables vehicles to communicate with roadside infrastructure and other vehicles and access real-time traffic information and warnings about hazards. By enhancing situational awareness for drivers and enabling features such as adaptive cruise control, connected vehicle technology improves safety and reduces accidents. TLI, in particular, works by alerting drivers to upcoming signal changes and allowing them to adjust their speed accordingly. This reduces the likelihood of unnecessary stops. Additionally, by facilitating smoother traffic flow and reducing unnecessary braking and acceleration, connected vehicles contribute to overall traffic efficiency.

Smart Intersection Technology

Road intersections result in numerous traffic accidents every year. Smart intersection technology thus aims to address the issues in this particular component of road infrastructure through the use of sensors and communication systems that optimize traffic flow and reduce the risk of collisions. Features such as adaptive traffic signals and pedestrian detection systems help manage traffic more effectively and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.

A version of this system can be found in Singapore’s Smart Traffic Management System (STMS), which employs a combination of sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to optimize traffic flow at intersections. Its ability to analyse real-time traffic data and adjust signal timings dynamically allows STMS to help in reducing congestion. It also contributes to minimising waiting times and improving overall traffic efficiency in urban areas.

Electronic Toll Collection (ETC)

Electronic toll collection (ETC) systems streamline toll collection processes by enabling seamless and efficient transactions without the need for toll booths or manual payment. Directly addressing traffic buildup at tolling points greatly contributes to improving traffic flow and enhancing the efficiency of toll roads and bridges. Additionally, by minimising the need for vehicles to come to a complete stop, ETC systems contribute to smoother traffic flow and reduced fuel consumption.

Many places in the world now make use of such a system, which is used on toll roads and enables drivers to pay tolls electronically using a transponder mounted on their vehicle. As vehicles pass through tolling points, the system automatically deducts the appropriate toll amount from the driver’s prepaid account. This simplified process eliminates the need for manual payment and reduces congestion at toll booths.

Automated Speed Enforcement

Traffic law enforcement can also be made safer and more efficient with the assistance of smart solutions. One way of doing this is by using automated speed enforcement systems, which comprise cameras and sensors to detect vehicles that are speeding or violating traffic laws. These systems allow concerned government agencies to automatically issue fines or warnings to violators, improving overall compliance with speed limits. Additionally, by discouraging dangerous driving behaviour, automated speed enforcement contributes to overall traffic safety and efficiency.

Smart Street Lighting

Smart street lighting systems use LED lights equipped with motion sensors and adaptive controls to adjust brightness levels based on traffic, weather, and daylight conditions. The adaptive street lighting system in Oslo, Norway, for example, uses sensors and intelligent controls to adjust lighting levels based on factors such as traffic flow, pedestrian activity, and ambient light conditions. By enhancing visibility and safety for drivers and pedestrians, smart street lighting contributes to overall road safety. Additionally, by reducing energy consumption and light pollution, smart lighting solutions promote environmental sustainability and create more liveable urban environments.

The integration of smart solutions into road infrastructure and transportation systems offers numerous benefits, including improved traffic efficiency, enhanced road safety, and a more sustainable urban environment. By leveraging innovative technologies such as sensors, data analytics, and automation, we can create smarter, safer, and more liveable cities for generations to come.

6 Key Factors to Consider Before Taking Out COE Loans

In Singapore, the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) system plays a crucial role in vehicle ownership. Taking out a loan is often necessary for individuals looking to purchase or renew the COE for their vehicles. However, before committing to a COE loan in Singapore, it’s essential to consider several factors to ensure that you make an informed decision. In this article, we’ll discuss six key factors that you should carefully evaluate.

COE Quota and Prices

One of the primary factors to consider before taking out a loan is the current COE quota and prices. COE prices fluctuate based on demand and supply, and they can significantly impact the overall cost of purchasing or renewing a COE. Before applying for a COE loan, research the latest COE prices and trends to estimate the total expenses involved. Additionally, consider how quotas may affect future prices, especially if you plan to renew your COE.

Loan Interest Rates

Another critical factor to consider is the interest rate offered by the financial institution providing the COE loan. The interest rate directly affects the total amount you’ll repay over the loan term. Compare interest rates from different banks and financial institutions to find the most competitive option. Additionally, consider whether the interest rate is fixed or variable and how it may impact your monthly repayments.

Eligibility Criteria and Documentation

Next, before applying for a COE loan, familiarise yourself with the eligibility criteria set by the lender. These criteria may include minimum income requirements, credit score thresholds, and employment status. Ensure that you meet all eligibility requirements to increase your chances of loan approval. Additionally, prepare the necessary documentation, such as proof of income, identification documents, and vehicle details, to streamline the application process.

Loan Tenure and Repayment Period

Before you decide on a COE loan, carefully review the loan tenure and repayment period offered by the lender. The loan tenure refers to the duration over which you’ll repay the loan, while the repayment period determines the frequency of payments (e.g., monthly or quarterly). Choose a loan tenure that aligns with your financial capabilities and goals. While longer loan tenures may result in lower monthly payments, they often entail higher total interest costs.

Down Payment and Loan Amount

Determine the down payment required and the maximum loan amount offered by the lender. The down payment is the initial sum you must pay upfront, while the loan amount covers the remaining cost of the COE. Assess your financial situation to determine how much you can afford to put down as a down payment and how much you’ll need to borrow. Keep in mind that larger down payments may result in lower monthly payments and interest costs over the loan term.

Additional Fees and Charges

Before finalising a COE loan agreement, be aware of any additional fees and charges imposed by the lender. These fees may include processing fees, administrative charges, and late payment penalties. Factor these costs into your budget to ensure that you can afford the total expenses associated with the COE loan. Additionally, inquire about any potential rebates or incentives offered by the lender that could help offset some of these fees.

Taking out a COE loan in Singapore is a significant financial decision that requires careful consideration of various factors. Be sure to evaluate the COE quota and prices, loan interest rates, tenure and repayment period, down payment and loan amount, as well as additional fees and charges to help you make an informed choice that aligns with your financial goals and circumstances. Remember to also conduct thorough research, compare multiple loan options, and seek advice from financial experts if needed before proceeding with your COE loan application.

Corporate Gifting Done Right: How Personalised Gifts Elevate Employee Appreciation

In the modern workplace, creating a culture of appreciation and recognition is important to enhance employee morale, engagement, and retention. While traditional forms of recognition such as bonuses and promotions certainly have their place, personalised gifts in Singapore offer a unique opportunity to express gratitude in a tangible and meaningful way. In this article, we explore how corporate gifting, when done right, can elevate employee appreciation and contribute to a positive work environment.

The Power of Personalisation

Personalised gifts stand out because they go beyond generic tokens of appreciation. Companies that tailor gifts to individual preferences, interests, and achievements demonstrate a genuine understanding of their employees’ contributions and value as individuals. Whether it’s custom mini blocks, a monogrammed desk accessory, or a gift basket filled with their favourite treats, the personal touch communicates that the recipient is truly seen and valued.

Strengthening Relationships

Corporate gifting is an opportunity for employers to strengthen relationships with their employees on a personal level. When employees feel appreciated and valued, they are more likely to feel a sense of loyalty and commitment to their organisation. Personalised gifts shine in this regard, creating a sense of reciprocity and goodwill, ultimately fostering positive relationships between employers and employees that extend beyond the confines of the workplace.

Boosting Morale and Motivation

Receiving a personalised gift can have a significant impact on employee morale and motivation. It serves as a tangible reminder of their contributions and accomplishments, validating their hard work and dedication. This recognition not only boosts morale but also inspires employees to continue striving for excellence, knowing that their efforts are valued and appreciated by their employer.

Creating a Positive Work Environment

A culture of appreciation starts from the top down, and corporate gifting plays a crucial role in creating a positive work environment. When employees feel appreciated and recognised for their contributions, they are more likely to feel satisfied and engaged in their work. This, in turn, leads to higher levels of productivity, collaboration, and overall job satisfaction, benefiting both employees and employers alike.

Encouraging Peer-to-Peer Recognition

Personalised gifts can also serve as a catalyst for peer-to-peer recognition within the organisation. When employees see their colleagues being recognised and appreciated, it inspires them to do the same, creating a culture of appreciation that permeates throughout the entire workforce.

Demonstrating Corporate Values

Personalised gifts offer an opportunity for employers to demonstrate their corporate values and commitment to employee well-being. By investing in meaningful and thoughtful gifts, employers communicate their dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace culture where every employee is valued and respected.

Tailoring Gifts to Individual Preferences

The key to successful corporate gifting lies in understanding the unique preferences and interests of each employee. How To Choose Your Serviced Office In Singapore?

It’s 2024 and work has become so flexible that even workspaces and offices have taken newer and less conventional forms. In the past, traditional office settings were where companies leased large buildings and spaces were trending. But we now have other types, such as coworking spaces, serviced offices and even virtual offices, rising around the world.

That said, let us take a look at one of the newer types of workspaces: serviced offices.

What is a serviced office?

A serviced office refers to an office space that is fully furnished and managed by an operator or office provider for flexible use as offices. It is the perfect solution for businesses looking to start, upsize or downsize (based on the growth of the business), or just have physical spaces without the cost and hassle of traditional leases.

Serviced offices have become so popular around the world because of the ease of operations and cost-effectiveness. So, it’s no surprise that serviced offices in Singapore also experienced an increase in 2024 (source).

What are the advantages of serviced offices?

Choose Your Serviced Office In Singapore 2

The commercial landscape in Singapore is witnessing a significant expansion, with an influx of 2.9 million sq ft of new office space set to enter the market in 2024 (source). This unprecedented growth reflects a rapidly evolving office real estate sector.

Serviced offices have several advantages as a workspace, compared to traditional offices.

Affordability

Top of the list is affordability. Serviced offices help you skip to the good part where you save money, eliminating expenses like buying furniture, renovating buildings, IT, and maintenance. It is simply perfect for a business seeking to save more.

Ease of setup

With a serviced office, all you have to do is just move your staff inside and get to work! Serviced offices come equipped with all the essential equipment for a standard office, such as chairs, tables, desks, Wi-Fi, and reception. Serviced offices grant companies access to all they need to run the business which may have been too costly if they had to buy it all.

Flexibility

Serviced offices like Compass Offices provide unmatched flexibility, allowing enterprises to easily resize or customise their space according to their business needs. This adaptability supports growth, downsizing, or specific design requirements without the constraints of traditional leases. It’s an ideal solution for dynamic businesses seeking a tailored, scalable workspace in a fast-paced market.

Easy collaboration

It is so easy to work with business partners in serviced offices. Serviced offices gather businesses into a single place, making it easier to expand your network. There is also the added benefit of easy access to conferences and events organised by the provider or operator which also boost networking.

Serviced office or traditional office?

Traditional offices are directly leased or rented from a landlord for the long term. They allow complete control and customisation over the workspace but have a higher cost of set-up and maintenance.

Serviced offices, as mentioned earlier, offer already furnished spaces for work.

When it comes to offices for rent in Singapore, serviced offices would always be preferable to traditional offices for the following reasons:

  • Serviced offices are more affordable than traditional offices. Traditional offices would require large amounts to be paid upfront, and as the company grows, the overhead costs increase significantly. As a matter of fact, companies can save as much as 86% in overhead costs when they use serviced offices compared to traditional offices.
  • Serviced offices are flexible offices, and they allow a company to increase or downsize at their pace, without any significant cost implications.
  • Serviced offices eliminate the cost and time needed for purchasing furniture and designing of the workspace. They allow quick commencement of work. Traditional offices would take time and substantial funds to design the office and purchase equipment.
  • Serviced offices remove the burden of maintenance from the company. This is not the case with traditional offices, as the tenant bears the cost of maintenance in terms of renovation and enhancement of the workspace, for instance.
  • Serviced offices offer a low-risk solution for startups and new business centres in Singapore. Traditional offices are not ideal for such businesses.

Serviced office or coworking space?

Choose Your Serviced Office In Singapore 3

Coworking spaces are workspaces that allow individuals from different businesses and professions to work on their different projects in the same space. These workspaces can also be used by small teams who want to collaborate. However, the general idea is that the workspace is not exclusive to a company or team. So there are no “hot desks” or “fixed desks” where you continue your night.

A serviced office in contrast is usually rented out by a company or a team for its employees. They might share a lounge, break rooms and kitchens, with other businesses, depending on the type of workspace, but they have areas in the main workspace that are exclusive to them.

What is the cost of a serviced office in Singapore?

Office rental in Singapore varies, depending on the location, the type of space and the size of the space. To get a serviced office in Singapore, the price typically starts at about SGD 400 per month. This offers a very affordable and flexible solution for businesses and startups.

Since the pandemic in 2020, work and business have not remained the same. One area that is still very obviously impacted is the nature of work, workspaces, and collaborations.

Serviced offices are the perfect solution for individuals and companies looking to strike a balance between traditional workspaces and coworking spaces. They offer affordable spaces, with privacy and control, yet remove the burden and cost of maintenance and furnishing. If you are considering an office for rent in Singapore, then a serviced office would be perfect for you and your organisation.

5 Best Special Needs & Early Intervention Centres in Singapore 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of special education in Singapore, finding the right institution for your child’s unique needs can be a daunting task. With the advent of the government’s Compulsory Education framework in 2019, which mandates attendance for students with moderate-to-severe special needs, the demand for inclusive and specialized educational facilities has surged. From inclusive preschools to specialized early intervention centres, Singapore offers a diverse array of options tailored to cater to the individual requirements of differently-abled children.

With 19 government-funded SPED schools and numerous private institutions, the choices can seem overwhelming. Moreover, the controversy surrounding therapies like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) adds another layer of complexity for parents seeking the most suitable interventions for their children. While some advocate for ABA therapy, others question its efficacy and ethical implications, emphasizing the importance of exploring alternative approaches that focus on empowering individuals rather than “fixing” them.

Despite the challenges, parents in Singapore are not alone in their quest for inclusive and supportive education for their children. From navigating the diagnostic process to accessing therapy and support services, the journey may be long, but the destination—a nurturing and enriching educational environment—is worth the effort. Whether you’re considering government-funded programs like the Early Intervention Programme for Infants & Children (EIPIC) or exploring private therapy options, there are resources available to assist you in making informed decisions that prioritize your child’s well-being and development. In this article, we’ve curated a list of the 5 best special needs and early intervention centres in Singapore [2024 review] to help you navigate this important decision-making process.

8 Strategic National Projects Paving the Way to Make Singapore a Smart Nation

Few countries do megaprojects quite like Singapore does. The country already has a massive list of projects and long-term policy decisions that have gone on to become positive examples, not just for Southeast Asia but also for superpowers like the United States and China. Continually exceeding the world’s expectations, Singapore has reached a point where it would be more surprising to see it adhere to conventional practices and just do what everyone else does.

In the digital age, Singapore’s collective resolve to be at the forefront of innovation is underscored by eight Strategic National Projects that promise to transform the city-state into a smart nation and maintain its global edge over the next decade. These diverse policies, identified and codified by the Smart Nation Group of the Ministry of Communication and Information, are part of an ongoing process of “smartisation” that aims to take the country’s digital transformation into overdrive. Let’s briefly look at these keystone initiatives and the way they might make an already smart nation even smarter:

1. National Digital Identity

Singapore’s National Digital Identity (NDI) initiative aims to provide citizens, residents, and businesses with a secure yet accessible digital ecosystem for online government services. Projects similar to NDI have been implemented elsewhere, but Singapore’s efforts have been characterised by their efficient and rational handling, particularly in the user experience provided by the Singpass app.

The app has been around in various forms since 2003, making it one of the earliest of its kind. It has since evolved to match the needs of various Singapore-based entities, even providing multiple methods of two-factor authentication to thwart emerging cyber threats. The one-tap access to popular government services and seamless digital signatures enabled by the system has earned it high ratings on both Google Play and the Apple Store, something that’s rather unusual for a government-issued app.

2. GoBusiness

GoBusiness is set to consolidate a variety of publicly available grant and license applications, under two websites, namely the Business Grants Portal and GoBusiness Licensing Portal, giving locally based business entities one-stop shops for government assistance. This project is part of wider efforts within the bureaucracy to eliminate red tape, saving time and boosting the country’s vaunted “innovation ecosystem”.

3. CODEX

The Core Operations Development Environment and eXchange (CODEX) is a unique digital platform meant to boost collaboration between Singapore’s public and private sectors. The platform is specifically designed for scalability and reliability, leveraging commercial cloud services and standardising the way various users share information. When the system matures, the hope is that developers will use it to build easily adaptable applications for both personal and institutional use within Singapore.

4. Electronic Payments

Singapore’s electronic payments (E-payments) initiative has been in progress for over a decade, with the FAST (Fast and Secure Transfers) launch in 2014 serving as its first milestone. The various government offices tasked with this project have since gone on to make several improvements in the country’s E-payment experience, stimulating the country’s digital economy in the process. Today, the initiative is widely regarded to be a runaway success, given the remarkable ubiquity of e-payments in Singapore.

5. LifeSG

Initially launched as Moments of Life in June 2018, the LifeSG app is now a gateway to one of the most successful government e-platforms of its kind, connecting Singapore citizens and residents to over 40 government services and growing. The popularity and security of the app have also seen over 50 private organisations use it as an authentication gateway. Additional services are also constantly being added through the app, making it a vital part of contemporary life in SG.

6. Punggol Smart Town

The Punggol Digital District (PDD), Singapore’s anticipated master-planned “smart district” will bring together academia, industry, and the wider community both physically and online. It’s one of those projects that could probably be only done in a small developed country like Singapore due to the otherwise immense challenges of incentivising major entities to uproot themselves from their historic districts to places farther away.

Once the PDD is completed, major research centres, strategic industries, and necessary talents can be located in one area, allowing for seamless interaction between the main drivers of the Singaporean innovation ecosystem. There are also plans to integrate cutting-edge recreational options into the PDD to further incentivise moves to the district.

7. Smart Nation Sensor Platform

The Smart Nation Sensor Platform (SNSP) is set to take SG’s smartisation process even further. The SNSP is an integrated nationwide platform of sensors that are foreseen as aiding everything from water conservation to public safety. Once fully operational, the network will be able to perform diverse tasks such as detecting drowning incidents at public pools, providing real-time assistance to the mobility impaired, and providing real-time information on water leaks.

Eventually, app developers will be able to leverage the information provided by the sensors to provide a wider variety of services. Generative AI may even be used in conjunction with these sensors to provide near-instant assistance to residents in need.

8. Smart Urban Mobility

Singapore’s transportation sector has long been among the world’s most admired and the Smart Urban Mobility project is likely to secure this status for decades to come. It’s especially notable for its current explorations in the use of autonomous vehicles, but its other less-prominent forays are likely to make similarly big impacts. For instance, the pioneering moves towards smart commute management and hands-free ticketing technology may eventually become watershed moments for both transportation inclusivity and efficiency, not just in Singapore but in the rest of the world.

Making Singapore Smarter, One Project at a Time

Singapore Digital Nation

Singapore’s eight projects are notable, not just in their ambition but also in the way they are squarely focused on digital transformation. They highlight the remarkable speed of the country’s bureaucracy while also bringing to mind the decades of preparation the country has done to bring itself fully online.

Through these projects, Singapore is actively shaping a future where technology catalyses progress across all facets of society. While it isn’t the only advanced country attempting to accomplish so many major changes all at once, it may be one of the few where the interconnectedness of both human and digital systems is taken seriously. Once Singapore succeeds, these projects may again serve as templates for the rest of the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

Buying Guide 2024: 5 Best Security Cameras to Buy in Singapore

Do you want to protect your home from intruders? Your best bet is a security camera. With today’s always-on, WiFi-connected cameras, monitoring your home is easy even when you’re on vacation.

That said, security cameras have endless varieties like any other home electronic device. There is also ample variety in pricing, with some flashy models with advanced features costing hundreds of dollars.

We’ve carefully selected models from well-known brands that will suit the needs of different homeowners or even those looking to enhance the security of their offices or shops. But before we dive into the reviews, it’s important to discuss the factors you should base your decision on.

What are the Different Types of Security Cameras?

Security cameras differ by design and features. For security purposes, closed circuit television or CCT cameras have been popular for a long time. However, newer, more compact security cameras are better suited for homes. These security cameras differ from CCTV cameras, which usually require a lot of storage and wired connectivity.

Here are the different types of security cameras:

  • Dome cameras: These dome-shaped cameras typically go on the ceiling and provide a 360-degree view of the space.
  • Tilt-and-pan cameras: These cameras have motors that allow them to move and capture a wide field of view. They can tilt and pan 360 degrees to cover the entire room/space.
  • Bullet cameras: These resemble the cameras frequently used in CCTV systems. With a longer range, they can cover a large area. However, they may not offer a 360-degree view.
  • Wireless cameras: These cameras connect to your phone wirelessly through WiFi. Some wireless cameras may also have rechargeable batteries.
  • IP cameras: Internet Protocol (IP) cameras utilise the Internet to transfer feed. These can be wired or wireless.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Security Camera

  • Resolution: Security cameras have different resolutions. A 1080p resolution is generally good enough, but if you want even better, go for 2K.
  • Field of view: The field of view is critical because the coverage of the area is highly dependent on it. If you want to see the entire area, invest in a 360-degree camera. But if you want to focus only on one room or entrance, a 90 to 180-degree view field could also work.
  • Night vision: Most security cameras have infrared night vision capability that allows them to record footage in the dark. However, pay attention to how far the night vision works.
  • Weather resistance: If you’re installing the security camera outdoors (near a gate or window), ensure that it’s weather resistant. That way, rain, dust, and moisture won’t ruin it.
  • Storage: Where will the footage be stored? If you want to store more footage, buy a camera with extendable external storage (memory card). Many security cameras also have cloud storage options.
  • WiFi connectivity: While not necessary, a WiFi connection in a security camera lets you view your home in real time. Plus, with WiFi-connected cameras, you can receive alerts or use a microphone on the camera.
  • Advanced features: If you want to take advantage of advanced features like custom alerts or motion sensors, look for a camera that offers such capabilities for securing your home.
  • Assembly and installation: Lastly, pay attention to the assembly and installation requirements. Most security cameras today are fairly easy to install and have all the necessary hardware. However, you should consider where you plan to mount it.

Take a step back in the past with a visit to the historical city of Malacca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a treasure trove of history, architecture, culture, and fabulous cuisine.

The distance from Singapore to Malacca is 204 km. The former Portuguese, Dutch, and finally British colony is best assessed by bus from Boon Lay, Singapore, which covers the cross-border trip to Malacca Central in just under four hours.

Wander down Jonker Street, the vibrant marketplace, and savor authentic Nyonya cuisine, a blend of Malay and Chinese flavors that will take you on a culinary trip craving for more.

Pulau Ubin, Singapore

weekend getaway from singapore 2

Most weekend getaways from Singapore involve crossing the border, but within the nation lies Pulau Ubin, a gem of an island just a stone’s throw away from the mainland.

What draws visitors to this rustic piece of paradise is its laid-back charm which provides a glimpse of the day-to-day life in a kampong or a Malaysian village.

While Pulau Ubin is basically a day trip from Singapore, it is better to spend a night or two to see all the attractions, mainly the Chek Jawa Wetlands, a haven for some unique flora and fauna.

Batam, Indonesia

A short ferry ride from Singapore will bring you to this charming island located in the Riau Archipelago, which boasts surreal coastal views and an array of outdoor activities to keep anyone engaged throughout the weekend.

Batam is a virtual paradise for those looking for some relaxation as well as adventure. The iconic Barelang Bridge is a must-visit place as this splendid piece of architecture includes several other smaller islands and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding vistas.

For food lovers, the Golden Prawn 933 cafe is the place to indulge in some lip-smacking food. Treat yourself to a traditional Indonesian massage at the renowned Batam wellness centre where skilled hands will leave you rejuvenated and ready to tackle more

Borneo, Malaysia

weekend getaway from singapore 3

For rich biodiversity, there is no other place than Borneo on the entire planet. From the lush Kinabalu Park to cruising on the river and visiting Bako National Park, Borneo promises a weekend stay out of the ordinary.

5 Best Public Speaking Courses for Kids in Singapore: 2024 Guide

For some, public speaking may come naturally, but speaking in a public setting can be a nightmare for many. It’s best to develop this skill in kids early on. We’ve rounded the five best public speaking courses for kids in Singapore [2024 review].

Public speaking refers to communicating information to the public. It can take many forms, from presenting in a class of peers to speaking to a crowd of thousands.

Contrary to popular opinion, public speaking isn’t just about fluency in a language– it’s about delivering your message precisely and with the right emotions. These general speaking classes in Singapore teach children the techniques to speak eloquently and confidently to people.

What is the best age to learn public speaking?

Children as young as five can participate in public speaking courses and develop strong communication skills. However, older children and teenagers may particularly benefit from learning public speaking techniques as they can apply them in real life, whether presenting in class or debating peers.

What are the benefits of public speaking for children?

Engaging in public speaking from a young age can provide children with developmental benefits. For starters, it can boost their confidence and help them overcome shyness.

More importantly, public speaking can improve their general communication skills, teaching them to organise and communicate their ideas quickly and coherently. They can also participate in school activities like debates, drama, and other activities that focus on communication.

A course in public speaking can also help with Direct School Admission (DSA). It will also look great on your child’s application when they apply for university admissions after high school.

9 Reasons Young Japanese Families Choose Singapore as Their New Home

Singapore has long been a popular destination for Japanese expatriates, even well before the country’s independence in 1964. In recent years, however, the demographics of long-term visitors to and residents of the city-state have begun to change. Previously, Japanese expatriates were mostly either solitary men temporarily relocating to the country for business (a practice called tanshin funin) or families composed of older couples where the husband was the primary breadwinner. Today, Japanese families moving to Singapore are trending younger and are far more likely to have two full-time earners.

While Singapore is not the only popular destination for migrating Japanese families, the Lion City has several distinct qualities that make it particularly attractive to younger Japanese. Let’s explore nine reasons why younger Japanese families are making the tough—but also easy—decision to move to Singapore:

1) A Large Japanese Community

A Japanese community has existed in Singapore since at least the British colonial era, maintaining a consistent presence in the Straits to the present day. As a result, the country has, over the years, developed significant local support infrastructure for Japanese visitors and expatriates, composed of both formal organisations and informal linkages. The presence of such a well-established and highly organised community of compatriots makes moving to Singapore significantly more attractive to Japanese families than to alternative destinations.

2) Accredited International Schools

Younger expatriate couples may struggle to find suitable educational options for their children overseas, and this is especially true for Japanese families. This isn’t an issue in Singapore, as the country is teeming with international schools serving foreign students of all ages and nationalities.

There are a range of accredited educational options for younger Japanese children in Singapore, one of which is Kinderland, an international preschool known for its Japanese-English Bilingual Programme. For an idea of the type of education children experience in these international schools, check out Kinderland’s activities on YouTube.

3) Language Advantages

As mentioned earlier, the Kinderland network of schools offers bilingual Japanese-English education in Singapore. However, Japanese children and their parents both have a wealth of other language learning options in Singapore, including in other major international languages like Mandarin, English, and French. Thanks to Singapore’s highly internationalised character, it’s one of the best destinations for entire families to work or study while immersing themselves in useful foreign languages.

4) High Quality of Life

Unlike many other popular destinations, Japanese families can expect a quality of life in Singapore that is directly comparable—and maybe even better—to what they could expect back home. Like Japan, Singapore is renowned the world over for its high levels of public safety, efficient public transportation, and wealth of top-tier attractions and diversions. Collectively, these qualities make Singapore a much friendlier place for Japanese families with young children.

5) Great Job Opportunities

Japan is still feeling the after-effects of its economic bubble bursting in the early 1990s. Though there are certainly plenty of high-quality jobs in Japan, the economy and its accompanying opportunities have mostly stagnated over the past few decades. Singapore, on the other hand, has a thriving economy that is expected to keep growing through the current decade and beyond.

Notably, Singapore currently offers median salaries almost twice that of Japan in many areas, albeit with correspondingly high living costs. Nonetheless, the maths of moving to Singapore works favourably for many Japanese families, particularly those with two breadwinners.

6) Warm Climate

Though the hot and humid Singaporean climate is a chief complaint of many expatriates and natives alike, it’s sometimes considered to be a perk by Japanese who come from their country’s colder northern prefectures. Unlike many homegrown Singaporeans, Japanese families that are tired of dealing with the sometimes unforgiving Japanese winters often find themselves appreciating the city state’s year-round balmy tropical climes.

7) Easy Access to Japan

As highly advanced Asian economies, Japan and Singapore have developed highly beneficial ties over the past century. As a result, multiple airlines now connect Singapore to several major Japanese cities and vice-versa, with multiple flights each day. The high frequency of flights and direct connections to multiple parts of Japan make Singapore especially attractive to families that need to regularly visit their home country.

8) Tax Benefits

Japan’s personal and corporate tax rates are among the highest in Asia, serving to reduce the spending power of families that are concerned with accumulating funds for their children’s future. High-earning Japanese families may find Singapore’s favourable taxes highly attractive, particularly if they own a business.

9) Multicultural Environment

Lastly, a growing number of younger Japanese families want their children to experience multicultural environments, viewing early exposure as crucial for future competitiveness in global job markets. While Japan itself is growing more diverse, Singapore leaves it behind in this respect, thanks to its extremely large international community and its shared values of tolerance and multiculturalism.

Singapore’s combination of favourable economic factors and family-friendly environment makes it a uniquely appealing destination for Japanese families with younger children. More than ever, the city-state is shedding its reputation as just another place for tanshin funin. In the eyes of a new generation of Japanese, it’s fast transforming into a great place to raise a family.

The best way to beat breast cancer: Early screening, prompt in treating

It is estimated that 1 in 13 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer can occur in women of all ages, although the majority are diagnosed in women above 50 years old. The good news is early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of death from breast cancer. At an early stage, breast cancer can be easier to treat. Regular screening in women 40 years of age and older can lower the breast cancer death rate by up to 50%.

“…early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of death from breast cancer.”

Early detection through regular screening

The Singapore Cancer Society recommends women perform monthly breast self-examinations. They can feel lumps and also have to be aware of unusual signs in the breast. A healthcare professional can also conduct clinical breast examinations.

Consult your doctor, especially if you suspect unusual signs.

Signs to watch out for in/by your breast area
Lump or thickening (also check underarm section)
Size/shape change
Dimple or puckering in skin
Inward nipple
Fluid discharge (not milk)
Scaly, red, or swollen skin
Orange-like dimples in skin

A mammogram, the breast x-ray, is the standard screening tool for early detection. The mammogram can show signs of a mass before a cancerous growth is of palpable size and before symptoms become apparent.

Older age groups of women are also recommended by the Singapore Cancer Society to undergo mammograms.

  • Women aged 40 to 49 undergo a yearly mammogram
  • Women above 50 undergo mammogram once every 2 years

Besides detection of abnormalities like a tumour, a mammogram can also indicate the breast density, that is the amount of fibrous and glandular tissues compared with the amount of fatty tissue.  A highly dense or dense breast is associated with a higher risk.

Are you at high risk of breast cancer or does your mammogram show abnormal finding/s?

Other tests may be recommended such as breast ultrasound which uses sound waves to form an image of breast tissues that show if a mass is solid or has fluid. Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnets, radio waves and the computer to get pictorial details of the breasts. Women with suspected growth will undergo a biopsy to check for cancer cells from collected tissues under a microscope.

Treatment options to fight breast cancer

The treatment plan for patients with breast cancer is based on several factors, which include the stage of cancer, tumour characteristics, the individual’s overall health as well as individual considerations.

Here are some common treatments for breast cancer:

Surgery: The surgical operation is performed based on the size of the tumour and where it is situated. Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) removes the cancer and some surrounding normal tissues but keeps the breast while mastectomy removes the entire breast. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or hormone therapy may also be given.

Radiation Therapy: High-energy X-rays are used to destroy cancer cells or suppress cancer cell growth.

Chemotherapy: Drugs are administered to kill cancer cells or prevent their growth.

Hormone Therapy: For tumours that are responsive to hormones, medications are used to block or interfere with hormones that fuel the growth of certain breast cancer cells.

Targeted Therapy: Drugs are designed to specifically target certain proteins in cancer cells. There are different types such as monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors, PARP inhibitors,  that kill the cancer cells, prevent their growth, or keep them from spreading.

Immunotherapy:  The body’s immune system that naturally fights diseases is used to kill cancer cells. Immunotherapy helps enhance the body’s response against cancer cells.

In consideration of individual profiles, personalized discussions with your doctor can help determine the treatment options.

Breast cancer impacts the lives of many women. Regular screening is critical to ‘catch’ breast cancer at an early stage when treatment is more effective.

If you have breast cancer, do not lose hope.

The availability of a plethora of options means doctors can personalise treatments to improve outcomes and preserve the quality of life for many patients with breast cancer.

Walk With Me

Walk With Me is a charity walk and fundraiser organised by HCA Hospice to normalise and raise awareness of palliative care, through the celebration of life and lives well-lived. The event also seeks to raise much-needed funds to sustain HCA’s programmes, which extend care and support to the terminally ill who choose to spend their last days at home, as well as their families, who are heavily involved in their care.

We often refer to the care and support of the terminally ill as a journey that the care team takes alongside the patient and their family, pacing with them and supporting them as they move towards the finishing line. With Walk With Me, we hope to invite all of you on a journey to support our beneficiaries, and uncover the many stories of lives well-lived, that our patients have taught us along the way.

Walk with us to show your support for terminally ill patients and their caregivers. The walk is a simple one suited for people of different physical abilities, including children, seniors and those on wheelchairs.

For this walk, HCA aims to raise at least $400,000 to provide professional and compassionate palliative care to an additional 200 families, on top of the 3,800 families we are currently supporting annually.

The event runs virtually from 18 September 2023 to 31 December 2023, and participants may choose their preferred distance and amount that they wish to fundraise. On 19 November 2023 (Sunday), particpantswho sign up as physical walkers will get to walk alongside our beneficiaries through the scenic route from Marina Barrage to East Coast park.

To enhance the experience this year, Runninghour is bringing back its signature Blindfold Walk/run segment for the first 1km. Participants can wear a blindfold for the first 500 metres, paired with a sighted person, before swapping roles for the next 500 metres.
